"This Is the Year..."

From the back of the bottom drawer of the filing cabinet in the storage closet behind the server rack, underneath the 1991 edition of the M Street Radio Directory...

It was September 1976. A new school year had begun, and the staff of WERG was hard at work integrating the campus radio station into the culture of Gannon College. The studios back then were located in the Zurn Science Center basement. Offices were on the 4th floor of Old Main. Needless to say, everybody got their steps in.

WERG, in the early days, was a 10-watt station with a signal that barely made it to 38th Street. But the spirit and drive of the staff was such that anybody receiving the attached memo would infer a professionalism typically assumed for the full-power broadcasters.

The list of personnel down the left side of the document are the biggest names of that era: WERG's first decade on-air. Their dedication to servicing the college and community provided the organizational and cultural foundation that 90.5 WERG was built-upon. And, 1976 was a pivotal year - as discussions to take WERG to a full-power, 3000-watt station began to take shape into actual plans that would be fulfilled the following year.
